Ballroom Dance Minor
Why Minor in Ballroom Dance?
The Ballroom Dance Minor provides students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge, technical proficiency, and artistic understanding of ballroom dance while complementing their primary field of study. Through coursework in technique, performance, and related areas, students can develop a strong foundation in ballroom dance and broaden their educational experience at BYU.
Students interested in pursuing the Ballroom Dance Minor are encouraged to review the requirements listed below. Certain courses and levels of training are required before students qualify to declare the minor. Once these requirements have been met, students should meet with the Ballroom Dance Minor Advisor to review their progress, discuss the remaining course requirements, and officially apply for the minor.
Whether you are interested in expanding your dance training, preparing for future opportunities in ballroom dance, or simply making ballroom dance a meaningful part of your BYU education, the minor offers a structured pathway for continued study and development.
Ballroom Minor Requirements
Requirement 1 – Complete the following core courses:

Please Note:
- A prospective Ballroom Dance Minor student must complete the following minor approval process before being accepted as a Ballroom Dance Minor:
- Complete:
- Dance 284 with a grade of B- or better*
- Dance 285 with a grade of B- or better*
- Complete:
- In the Dance Department, a grade of B- must be attained in a course designated as a technique course before a student can advance to the technique course of the next level. The passing grade for the course if the student does not wish to advance to the next technique level is the same for any dance major or minor course (i.e. C-).
- This dance minor does not provide public school certification.
- A class used in a student’s primary major cannot be used in a minor or second major without prior approval. Please see your advisor for details.
- Any higher-level technique class can be substituted for a lower-level technique class with Dance Department approval. Students audition for and are placed in their appropriate level and from there advance.
- Should minor course substitutions/transfers result in credit hour deficiencies, these deficiencies must be met. In other words, this minor cannot be completed with less than 15.0 credit hours. Please see your advisor for details.
